Animal shelters across the country do amazing and often underappreciated work, giving neglected, abandoned, and suffering animals a second chance at life. These organizations see heartbreaking cases every day—animals arriving in terrible condition, often scared, hurt, or in severe pain. But despite the challenges, these shelters always rise to the occasion, offering love, healing, and hope. One such case is that of a brave dog named Libby, whose story is a touching reminder of what compassion and community can achieve.
In August 2023, a stray pit bull named Libby arrived at the Humane Society for Tacoma and Pierce County in Washington state. From the moment she came through the door, it was clear that Libby had a sweet spirit. Shelter staff described her as “full of life” with a “sweet face and kind eyes” that made her instantly lovable. But behind those gentle eyes was a serious medical emergency that couldn’t be ignored—a tumor so large it stunned even the most experienced members of the shelter’s veterinary team.
Libby had a 10-pound mass—roughly the size of a volleyball—protruding from her body. It was one of the largest tumors the shelter had ever encountered. The growth was so large and heavy that it visibly weighed her down, and the discomfort she must have felt was unimaginable. Yet, despite the obvious pain she was in, Libby still managed to wag her tail and interact lovingly with staff, showcasing the resilience and trust animals can have even after enduring so much.
Her arrival couldn’t have come at a more chaotic time. The shelter, one of the largest intake facilities in Washington, was already overwhelmed. In just a 48-hour period, the Humane Society had responded to three urgent medical cases, including Libby’s. New animals were arriving by the dozen every day, each needing care, attention, and resources that were already stretched thin. Yet, when Libby walked through their doors, the staff knew they had to do everything they could for her.
“She deserves the most compassionate care possible, but we don’t know what her outcome will be at this time,” the shelter shared in an emotional post on social media. “Our veterinary team is working on every possible option and will start with testing to understand what kind of tumor Libby has. For now, she is receiving pain medication to ease her discomfort and endless love from our staff.”
After conducting x-rays and further evaluations, the team made a difficult discovery: the tumor had grown inside the bone of Libby’s upper right leg. The swelling had been caused by reactive inflammation, and the only viable treatment option was amputation. It was a serious surgery, but one that could finally free her from the chronic pain she had endured for so long.
Thanks to the incredible generosity of donors and supporters, the shelter was able to cover the cost of Libby’s surgery. The procedure was performed by the skilled veterinary staff at BluePearl Pet Hospital. In what can only be described as a miracle of modern veterinary care and human kindness, the surgery was a success. Libby’s leg was removed, and with it, the massive tumor that had caused her such suffering.
Although the operation removed the tumor, Libby’s health battle wasn’t over. She was diagnosed with aggressive bone cancer, a form that tends to spread quickly and limit an animal’s lifespan. While this news was heartbreaking, it also made the next chapter of Libby’s life all the more meaningful.
Amid the uncertainty, a ray of hope appeared. A veterinary technician who had been involved in Libby’s care was deeply moved by her gentle nature and unbreakable spirit. Despite knowing that Libby might not have much time left, she made the selfless decision to adopt her. “There’s something in her eyes that begs for love and safety,” the vet tech said in a heartfelt Facebook post. “I couldn’t turn away from that.”
Now renamed “Wiggles,” Libby is living her best life in her new forever home. She spends her days playing with her new dog brother, soaking up all the affection her new family can give, and napping comfortably on the couch. She’s surrounded by love, and for perhaps the first time in her life, she truly feels safe.
The Humane Society shared an update, saying, “Though we’re uncertain how much time she has left, we know she’ll spend her remaining days surrounded by love and comfort thanks to the kindness of our community.” And that’s exactly what Libby—now Wiggles—deserves.
Her story is a powerful testament to the impact shelters can have when communities come together. It highlights the resilience of animals, the compassion of people who care, and the importance of giving every creature a fighting chance. From the dedicated shelter staff who didn’t give up on her, to the veterinary team who performed the life-changing surgery, to the generous donors who made it all possible, and finally to the adopter who opened her heart and home—Libby’s story is the result of collective compassion in action.
As animal lovers, we are reminded through stories like Libby’s why it’s so important to support our local shelters. Whether through donations, volunteering, fostering, or adopting, there are countless ways to make a difference. Every effort matters, and every life saved is a victory worth celebrating.
So here’s to Libby—now Wiggles—the dog who defied the odds and found love in the face of adversity. Her journey may have started in pain and uncertainty, but it blossomed into a story of healing, hope, and unconditional love. We hope her remaining days are filled with belly rubs, playtime, warm blankets, and the joy of simply being loved.
