Pitbull was found covered in toxic green paint, chemical burns — rescue gives her a second chance

It’s hard to comprehend how cruel some people can be to innocent animals. One heartbreaking example of this cruelty is the story of a sweet dog named Clover, who became the victim of a horrific act when someone covered her in toxic green paint. The substance caused severe chemical burns across her skin, leaving her in excruciating pain and in desperate need of help. But thanks to a team of caring rescuers, Clover’s story took a beautiful and hopeful turn.

In May 2022, Love Leo Rescue, a nonprofit animal rescue organization based in Santa Monica, California, received a 911 call that changed everything. A pit bull had been found in critical condition, covered in a strange green substance that turned out to be a toxic paint. No one could understand why someone would do something so horrible to a helpless animal. The rescue group responded urgently to the call, knowing that this dog needed immediate medical attention to survive.

“We have no idea why someone would do this to her or what the underlying injuries are,” the organization wrote on social media at the time. “What we do know is that she needed help, and she needed it right away.”

The rescue team named her Clover and rushed her to the North Valley Veterinary Center, where veterinarians sprang into action. The first step was to remove the harmful paint, so the team gave her two medicated baths. Once the paint was washed away, they uncovered the extent of the damage: Clover had suffered severe chemical burns all over her skin. Her condition was serious and required intensive treatment and round-the-clock monitoring.

For several weeks, Clover remained under veterinary care. She fought through the pain with incredible resilience and spirit. Slowly but surely, she began to heal. As her skin recovered, her beautiful natural gray fur started to show again. More importantly, her sweet and gentle personality began to shine through as well. Even after all she had endured, Clover remained affectionate and trusting, eager to connect with the people who cared for her.

Once she was strong enough, Clover was placed in a foster home through Love Leo Rescue. Her foster family provided her with the love and patience she needed to continue healing, both physically and emotionally. She flourished in her new environment, enjoying long hikes, playful moments with other dogs, and plenty of cozy snuggles.

“When we first rescued her, she was completely covered in green paint,” the rescue group shared. “We had no idea what kind of damage we would find beneath it. But Clover powered through like a true pit bull. She never complained, never gave up. She’s blossomed into a joyful little girl who loves to play and cuddle.”

After months of recovery and progress, Clover was finally ready to find her forever home. However, the journey to adoption was not an easy one. Because of the trauma she had suffered, Clover was understandably nervous around people. She needed a family who was willing to work through those challenges and help her overcome her fear and anxiety. It wasn’t just about finding a home — it was about finding the right home. Sadly, some early adoption attempts didn’t work out, but the team at Love Leo Rescue remained hopeful.

Then, in June 2023, a miracle happened. Love Leo Rescue joyfully announced that Clover had been adopted by a compassionate couple named Eric and Aubrey. From the moment they met Clover, Eric and Aubrey showed a deep understanding of her needs. They didn’t rush the process. Instead, they patiently earned her trust, giving her the space and time she needed to feel safe.

“When she had accidents in the house, they responded with kindness and understanding,” the rescue wrote. “They thoughtfully introduced her to new people and new places, always with her comfort in mind. Thanks to their patience and love, Clover finally began to feel at home. She had found her place in the world.”

Clover’s new life was filled with hope and happiness, but in early 2025, she faced yet another challenge. The rescue shared that Clover had torn both of her ACLs — a serious injury for any dog, especially one who had already been through so much. The required surgery was expensive, costing $5,000 per knee, and the rescue turned to their community for support, asking for $5 donations to help cover the cost.

Despite this new setback, Clover’s spirit remained strong. Her family was committed to seeing her through the recovery process and supporting her every step of the way. They reported that Clover was still thriving, continuing to work through her lingering fear issues and enjoying a happy, full life. “She’s living her best life,” they shared proudly.

Clover’s story is one of unimaginable cruelty, but also one of strength, healing, and love. It’s almost impossible to believe that someone could be so heartless as to pour toxic paint on a defenseless dog. But what’s even more powerful is the way Clover bounced back. With the help of compassionate rescuers, a dedicated foster family, and a loving adoptive home, she was able to overcome her past and step into a new life filled with hope.

Her journey reminds us all that no matter how dark a beginning may seem, there is always the possibility of a brighter future. It also shows the importance of kindness, patience, and second chances — not just for animals, but for anyone who has ever been hurt or abandoned.

If Clover’s incredible story touched your heart, please share it with your friends and family. Let her story be a testament to the power of love, the importance of animal rescue, and the unbreakable spirit of one very special dog. 🍀💚
