John Vincent, a 69-year-old Marine Corps veteran who bravely served in the Vietnam War, found himself in hospice care at Raymond G. Murphy Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Facing the end of his life, John had very little family left and was forced to make a difficult decision. As his health declined, he had to say goodbye to his most trusted companion — a 5-year-old Yorkshire Terrier named Patch.

Because John had no relatives nearby who could care for Patch, he surrendered the little dog to Albuquerque Animal Welfare. It was a heartbreaking decision, but one made out of necessity. Despite the circumstances, the staff at the medical center and the animal welfare team recognized how important this little dog was to John, and they wanted to do something truly meaningful for a man who had served his country.

Amy Neal, a palliative care social worker at the VA medical center, was one of the people who helped coordinate John’s final wishes. When she sat with John and asked him if he had any last requests, his answer was immediate and full of emotion. He didn’t ask for riches, for a ceremony, or for special treatment. All he wanted was to see his dog Patch one last time.

“It was so clear how much he missed Patch,” Neal shared with the Albuquerque Journal. “I asked him if that’s something that would be meaningful for him, and he nodded right away. It all came together very quickly after that.”

Danny Nevarez, the director of Albuquerque Animal Welfare, recalled that once they received the request, there was no hesitation. “It was an immediate ‘absolutely.’ We were all in,” he said. “It was as simple as getting Patch over here.”

The team quickly arranged for Patch to be brought to the hospice facility. During the car ride, Patch was reportedly calm and quiet — until they neared the hospital. It was then that something changed. According to Nevarez, “It’s almost like he knew. He just started whimpering, like he could feel something big was about to happen.”

When Patch entered the hospital room, it was as if no time had passed. The little dog instantly recognized his beloved owner. As John reached out to embrace Patch, he said with a smile, “Yeah, that’s me, that’s daddy. Are you so happy to see me? I’m so happy to see you.”

It was a powerful and emotional reunion. Although John was visibly weak and bedridden, his face lit up with joy and love when he saw Patch again. For a few precious moments, it was just the two of them — man and dog, best friends reunited one final time.

John shared a bit about how Patch came into his life. Years earlier, a neighbor’s dog had a litter of puppies, and John instantly fell for the smallest one — a tiny Yorkshire Terrier with a distinct patch of white fur. The puppy reminded him of the single white patch of hair on his own chin. “We were the Patch brothers,” John said proudly. He loved the little dog’s size, especially since it made it easy to take him along on motorcycle rides. Albuquerque Animal Welfare later shared the story on social media, writing, “It was such a heartwarming moment! They were so happy to see each other and to say their goodbyes. It was an honor to make this veteran’s final wish come true.”

Even after the reunion, the story didn’t end there. While John prepared to pass on, Patch returned to the animal shelter where staff made sure he received the care and attention he needed. And the good news? There was already someone interested in adopting him. Although Patch would have to say goodbye to his first home, he had the promise of a new family, a fresh start, and hopefully more love-filled years ahead.

Of course, while Patch may find a new place to live, a part of his heart will always belong to John. Their bond was something special — forged through years of shared experiences, quiet companionship, and deep emotional connection.
