I’ve shared countless stories about abandoned dogs and the painful journeys they endure, but there’s something about Maeve’s story that lingers in a way I’ll never forget. It’s not just the cruelty she endured—it’s her quiet strength, her fragile hope, and the love that finally reached her just in time, even if only for a moment.
Maeve was a beautiful black dog who should have had the chance to live a joyful, carefree life like any other pup. But instead, someone without an ounce of compassion dumped her on the streets of Youngstown, leaving her to fend for herself. She didn’t have shelter, food, or safety—just the open road and an empty belly. With no choice but to survive on her own, she roamed the streets, scavenging for scraps, her eyes dull with sadness and hunger.
Tragically, while navigating the city streets, Maeve was struck by a car. No one stopped. No one helped. Alone and in pain, she struggled to get back on her feet. Her injuries were severe, but perhaps even more devastating was her broken spirit. Time and time again, humans had failed her. The people who were supposed to care abandoned her, and now, after everything, she found herself utterly alone and hurt. She made up her mind not to trust humans anymore.
Then something began to change.
Deputy Keith Stokes of the Mahoning County Dog Warden’s office heard reports about a stray dog in bad shape and immediately set out to find her. When he spotted her, it was clear how much pain she was in, but every attempt to approach her was met with fear. Maeve would bolt the moment anyone got too close. No matter how many times Stokes tried, she just didn’t want anything to do with people anymore. As Megan Zarlenga from the Mahoning County Dog Warden later told The Dodo, “He had tried repeatedly, but she would never let him get close to her.”
For days, Maeve avoided capture. She remained a ghost on the streets, frightened and limping, holding onto the only thing she thought could keep her safe—distance.
But then came a turning point. About a week after the first rescue attempt, Officer Megan Feidler spotted her. The moment she laid eyes on Maeve, her heart sank. The dog was nothing but skin and bones, barely able to walk. It was clear she had been suffering for a long time. As fate would have it, Deputy Stokes also arrived on the scene shortly after. He and Officer Feidler worked together to surround the dog, gently trying to stop her from running off again.
Recognizing that Maeve was particularly fearful of him, Stokes stepped back and allowed Officer Feidler to take the lead. Feidler did something simple yet powerful—she sat down on the ground, lowered herself to Maeve’s level, and started talking to her in a soft, reassuring voice.
The scared dog looked at Feidler with wide, weary eyes. For a long moment, it seemed she was trying to decide if this human was different—if maybe, just maybe, this one could be trusted. And then, something miraculous happened. Maeve slowly approached and laid down next to Feidler. It was the first time in a long time that she had let her guard down.
“I felt so sad for her,” Feidler later recalled. “She was obviously scared and very skinny. Eventually, she laid down next to me, and I’m just talking to her and petting her, letting her know it’s OK.”
With Feidler’s comforting presence, Maeve allowed her to slip a leash over her neck. She didn’t resist. The rescuers gently carried her to the van, and once inside, Maeve curled up and finally closed her eyes. She was safe.
She was rushed to the vet by the kind-hearted team at Friends of Fido Animal Rescue, a nonprofit group based in Youngstown. The moment she arrived, it was clear her condition was critical. Maeve was severely malnourished, and x-rays revealed multiple fractures in her pelvis as well as injuries to her lungs. Every breath was a struggle, and worst of all, she refused to eat or drink. The trauma she had endured—both physical and emotional—was overwhelming.
The veterinary team immediately began treating her with IV fluids and placed her on oxygen to ease her breathing. The rescue team stayed by her side, holding her, whispering kind words, and doing everything they could to let her know she was not alone. For the first time in her life, Maeve was surrounded by people who truly cared.
“We need her to feel good again. We need her to know that she is loved more than she can imagine… more than she ever has been,” the shelter shared on Facebook.
For days, they fought for her. Every heartbeat, every labored breath—Maeve gave everything she had. But her little body had been through too much. Despite the best efforts of her medical team and the unwavering love of her rescuers, Maeve’s condition continued to decline. She grew weaker with each passing day.
Eventually, her brave fight came to an end. Maeve crossed the rainbow bridge, leaving behind a trail of broken hearts. Her final moments were filled with love, surrounded by the gentle hands and warm words of people who had refused to give up on her. In the end, Maeve didn’t die alone. She died knowing that she was deeply loved, that her life mattered, and that her pain was finally over.
Now, Maeve runs free in a place with no pain, no hunger, and no fear. A place where every dog is cherished. Though her life was short and filled with far too much suffering, Maeve’s story touched the hearts of everyone who heard it. She reminded us all why rescue work matters—and why every dog deserves a second chance.
To the heroes who never gave up on her, who showed her what love really means—thank you. Maeve’s spirit lives on in every act of kindness, in every dog saved, and in every broken heart mended by compassion.
