Dog returns to shelter for third time after being abandoned by adopter, severely underweight — now has good news

When a dog gets adopted, everyone hopes it will be forever. We imagine a future full of love, comfort, and happiness for them, far away from the stress and sadness of shelter life. Unfortunately, not every adoption turns out to be a fairy tale. For some dogs, the dream of a forever home shatters, and they find themselves back at the shelter, abandoned once again.

One recent case broke many hearts. A dog named Lynch ended up back in the care of the Paris Animal Welfare Society in Kentucky for the third time. His heartbreaking return was made even worse by his shockingly thin frame, but even after all the disappointment and neglect, Lynch’s joyful and loving spirit never faded. And in a turn of events, his story recently took a much happier direction.

It all began on November 26, when the Paris Animal Welfare Society posted about Lynch’s devastating situation. The shelter explained that Lynch had come back to them yet again after going through one terrible event after another. His journey had been anything but easy.

Lynch first entered the shelter as a stray in May 2023. At that time, his original owner came forward and reclaimed him. Everyone thought that was the end of his shelter days. Sadly, it wasn’t. Just a few months later, in February 2024, Lynch was picked up as a stray once more. This time, no one came looking for him, no one called, and no one showed up to take him home.

In March, Lynch’s luck seemed to turn around. A new family adopted him, and the staff at the shelter were hopeful that this would finally be his happy ending. Unfortunately, just months later, those hopes were crushed. The Paris Animal Welfare Society was notified that Lynch had been found at a different shelter, nearly an hour away from them. He had been abandoned again, this time by the very people who were supposed to give him a second chance.

What made Lynch’s return even more heartbreaking was the state of his health. When Lynch had been adopted, he weighed a healthy 65 pounds. Now, he had dropped to a dangerously low 39.3 pounds. It became painfully clear that Lynch had not only been abandoned, but had suffered from severe neglect in his so-called home. The shelter staff could hardly believe the transformation in Lynch’s condition.

“To say we were shocked at the state of Lynch would be a complete understatement,” the Paris Animal Welfare Society wrote on their Facebook page. “We believed his adopter was going to give him a happy, loving life, and instead, he was left hungry, neglected, and abandoned. Our hearts are completely shattered for our sweet boy.”

Despite everything Lynch had endured, the staff noticed something remarkable. His spirit remained unbroken. Even after all the betrayal, his tail wagged excitedly the moment he returned to the shelter. “Despite all the neglect and hardship, Lynch greeted us with nothing but love and joy,” the shelter wrote. “His tail hasn’t stopped wagging since he came back. He’s just the happiest, sweetest dog.”

Not everyone reacted kindly to the shelter’s post. Some people criticized the Paris Animal Welfare Society, blaming them for not being careful enough during the adoption process. The shelter didn’t shy away from responsibility. They admitted their mistake and promised the community they would not let Lynch down again.

In a heartfelt comment on their Facebook post, the shelter shared their feelings: “Our entire team is devastated. We feel like we failed Lynch, and we are doing everything in our power to make it right. We are committed to making sure this never happens to him again.”

The shelter also confirmed they had reported Lynch’s abandonment to the proper authorities. As of now, it’s unclear if any charges have been filed against Lynch’s former adopter or if there’s an active investigation. What mattered most to the shelter, though, was that Lynch was safe and back with people who truly cared about him.

In a heartwarming update, the shelter later shared some wonderful news about Lynch’s future. On December 4, they announced that Lynch had been adopted again, this time by someone who promised to give him the loving forever home he always deserved.

Photos showed Lynch smiling next to his new mom, his tail wagging as brightly as ever. The shelter reported that Lynch had started to regain his weight, now up to 42.9 pounds, and would continue his recovery journey with his new family.

“After a lot of thought and consulting with our vet, we decided there was no reason for Lynch to stay in the shelter while he gained weight,” the shelter explained. “He could do that just as well, or even better, in a loving home. We received so many adoption applications and so much support for Lynch. If you weren’t chosen, please know it was an incredibly difficult decision with many wonderful people wanting to give him a home.”

After experiencing so much pain and disappointment, it finally seems Lynch has found his true forever family. His new mom expressed her happiness, commenting, “From now on, Lynch will only know love. He is such a distinguished gentleman and deserves the very best.”

Lynch’s story had many heartbreaking moments, but it ended on the most beautiful note possible. Now, he will live the life every dog dreams of, surrounded by love, care, and safety. We’re rooting for Lynch and his new family, believing that this time, the forever home really is forever.

Please spread Lynch’s story. Every dog deserves a happy ending. ❤️
