Under a hulking piece of heavy machinery, on a patch of cold, hard dirt, a dog waited for something to change. He was chained there, with nowhere to go and nothing to look forward to but the scraps that sometimes came his way. His name was Haenguni, which means “Lucky.” At that moment, it was the cruelest irony anyone could imagine.

Haenguni was only about three or four years old, an age when a dog should be chasing balls and napping in sunny spots. Instead, he was barely hanging on. His belly was swollen enormously with fluid, so heavy that it dragged along the ground whenever he tried to move. Every breath was a struggle. Anyone who saw him could tell he was running out of time.
Thankfully, someone saw him. He was rushed to an emergency veterinary hospital, where the team went to work right away. When they placed him on the scale, the number was staggering. Haenguni weighed roughly 95 pounds, or 43.2 kilograms. More than 33 pounds, or 15 kilograms, of that was nothing but fluid trapped inside his abdomen. Imagine carrying that much extra weight with a failing body, day after day, with no one to help you.
The diagnosis was just as heavy. Haenguni had stage 4 heartworm disease, the most advanced and most dangerous form. The parasites had been silently damaging his heart and lungs for a long time, and his body was paying the price.
Heartworm disease is spread through mosquito bites, and it can be prevented with regular medication. But for a dog left outside on a chain, that kind of protection was simply out of reach. By the time help arrived, the damage was already severe.
The veterinarians knew they had to move carefully. Removing all that fluid at once could have sent his frail body into shock, so they drained it slowly, over several sessions, giving him time to adjust. Only then could they begin the treatment he so badly needed: a demanding series of heartworm injections. It is a difficult and risky road even for a strong dog, and Haenguni was anything but strong. He was exhausted, in pain, and fighting for every breath.
And yet, something remarkable happened. Whenever a gentle hand reached out to comfort him, Haenguni wagged his tail. After everything he had been through, after being left alone in the cold, he still responded to kindness with hope. That small, sweet movement told the whole team what they needed to know. This dog wanted to live.
Against the odds, he did beat the heartworms. For a moment, it felt like the hardest part was over. But Haenguni’s journey was far from finished.
The disease had left lasting damage behind. The fluid in his abdomen, a condition known as ascites, kept coming back. Slowly but surely, it pushed his weight past 90 pounds again, and the vets had to drain it again and again. At one point, the total amount removed added up to more than 27 liters. Each time, Haenguni got a little relief. Each time, the fluid returned.
Then came another blow. During his checkups, doctors discovered a tumor in his spleen. The news made his outlook even more uncertain, and the medical team could only describe his prognosis as guarded. There were no easy answers and no promises, only the next day and the care it would require.
More than 200 days have now passed since the day Haenguni was found. There is still no permanent cure for his condition. He depends on daily medication and repeated fluid drainages just to stay comfortable and stay alive. It is a hard routine, and it would be easy to focus on all that is wrong.
But if you ask the people who care for him, they will tell you to look at Haenguni himself. His coat, once dull and neglected, is shiny again. He eats his meals with real enjoyment. He greets the staff with a bright, happy smile, and he leans into the people who saved him, showing the kind of deep affection that only a dog who knows what it means to be alone can show. He has not lost his spirit. If anything, it has grown stronger.
It takes remarkable trust to keep smiling after being let down so badly. Haenguni had every reason to be wary of people. Instead, he chooses affection, again and again, and that quiet courage is what makes his story so hard to forget.
The rescue team has made a quiet promise to this brave boy. They will not give up on him. Day after day, appointment after appointment, they keep showing up, because Haenguni deserves nothing less. Whatever time he has left, they want it to be filled with comfort, peace, and love, the things he should have had from the very beginning.
Haenguni’s story is not a simple fairy tale, and it does not promise a perfect ending. But it reminds us of something important. Even the most overlooked, forgotten animal can be reached by compassion, and a single act of kindness can give a suffering soul a reason to keep wagging his tail.
If Haenguni’s courage touched your heart, take a moment to leave a kind word for him below. Every message of love is a reminder that he is no longer alone, and that he is cherished by people all over the world. Even a few kind words can mean the world.
