While running errands in Chino Hills, California, Stephanie Castillo encountered a sight that stopped her in her tracks and made her heart sink. Outside the Priceless Pet Rescue building, a small cage sat alone — and heartbreakingly overcrowded. Inside, seven terrified dogs were crammed together, struggling to breathe, visibly shaken, and covered in filth. Whoever had left them there had vanished, leaving no explanation, no note, and no mercy.
“My stomach immediately sank,” Castillo recalled. “I knew I had to do something, anything.”
The image of the tiny cage, with all those scared animals crushed together, haunted her. Castillo had no idea where the dogs had come from or how long they’d been there. But one thing was crystal clear: they were in serious distress. Trusting her instincts, she immediately tried to contact Priceless Pet Rescue, hoping someone could come quickly to take the dogs in. To her dismay, she learned the facility was closed for the day.
It was an unseasonably hot afternoon. The sun was bearing down, and the heat was growing more intense by the hour. Castillo noticed signs of heat exhaustion among the dogs—panting, lethargy, and dehydration. Even worse, she spotted a senior dog in the group who was blind and in extremely poor condition. It was evident the animals had been left there for quite a while, their bodies coated in their own waste. The urgency of the situation could not be overstated.
“They were sitting in their own filth and panting … I also noticed there was a blind senior dog that was in really bad shape,” she said.
Knowing she couldn’t leave them behind, Castillo reached out to her local humane society in hopes they could send someone quickly. Unfortunately, they informed her it might take several hours before help could arrive. As temperatures continued to rise, Castillo’s concern for the dogs’ well-being escalated. She couldn’t just stand by and do nothing.
“It would only get hotter as the day went on,” Castillo explained. “So I opted to take them in myself.”
Determined to provide immediate care, she loaded the cage into her car and drove the frightened pack home. Once there, she carefully opened the cage and allowed the dogs to step out onto clean ground for the first time in what seemed like days. One by one, they emerged—shaky, unsure, but grateful. She gave them water, food, and, most importantly, compassion.
“They looked like they had been through a lot,” she said, reflecting on the trauma they had clearly endured.
Despite being overwhelmed and exhausted, Castillo was relieved to see the dogs begin to settle. Once she ensured they were safe and as comfortable as possible, the humane society finally arrived. The rescue team provided critical medical care, vaccinations, and initial assessments. From there, the dogs were transferred to Priceless Pet Rescue’s Costa Mesa location, where a team of dedicated professionals stepped in to continue their recovery journey.
The story doesn’t end there. All seven dogs — now named Hal, Reese, Dewey, Francis, Malcolm, Lois, and Rudy — have made incredible strides since that painful day. Though they had been abandoned in the worst conditions imaginable, their spirits weren’t broken. Through the kindness of strangers and the tireless work of rescue organizations, they are now safe and thriving.
You can follow their full rescue journey online, where videos and updates capture their progress — from frightened, trembling pups in a filthy cage to clean, happy dogs discovering what it means to be loved.
Each of these dogs is now available for adoption through Priceless Pet Rescue. They are looking for permanent homes with families who will give them the warmth and stability they’ve always deserved. After everything they’ve endured, from neglect to abandonment, they’re ready to start the next chapter of their lives — a chapter filled with belly rubs, long walks, and unconditional love.
“[These dogs have] faced uncertainty, but [their] spirit remains unbroken,” wrote Priceless Pet Rescue in a heartfelt post on their website.
Heather Gameros, the rescue’s adoption manager, shared that two of the dogs have already found loving homes. She remains hopeful that the remaining five will soon be adopted as well. Every day brings new potential adopters through the rescue’s doors, and each one has the chance to offer a fresh start to one of these resilient animals.
“They truly deserve the world,” Castillo said. “With some love and attention, they will live very happy lives.”
Stories like this one are a powerful reminder of the importance of compassion and community in animal rescue. They highlight the difference that one person can make when they choose action over indifference. Had Castillo walked past that cage and done nothing, it’s impossible to say what might have happened. But because she chose to care, seven lives were saved.
This incident also calls attention to the need for responsible pet ownership and the ongoing issue of animal abandonment. There are too many animals out there who suffer in silence — abused, neglected, or simply discarded when they’re no longer convenient. It’s up to all of us to be their voices and protect them when no one else will.
Thankfully, the dogs in this story have a new lease on life, and their journey is a testament to resilience, hope, and the transformative power of love. With their past behind them and their futures looking brighter every day, they are living proof that even the most broken beginnings can lead to beautiful endings.
