However, there was still one challenge ahead. During her medical evaluation, it was discovered that Nikki was suffering from heartworm, a potentially serious condition that requires treatment. Thankfully, the condition was caught in time, and Nikki began a four-week course of treatment that includes medication and closely monitored walks on a leash. Though she has a road to recovery ahead, she is in great hands and receiving all the care she needs.
Throughout her treatment, Nikki has remained gentle and resilient, adjusting to her new environment with surprising grace. Perhaps the most touching part of her journey is that she still clings to her stuffed animal—the same toy she carried with her through the lonely streets of Detroit. Now, Nikki spends her days in a safe, warm environment, receiving the love and attention she had been missing for so long. Once she fully recovers, Almost Home Animal Rescue will begin the process of finding her a forever home—a place where she will never be alone again.
