That was the case one day on the streets of Lanús, a city just outside Buenos Aires, Argentina. Two young men were walking when they spotted something moving slowly and awkwardly out of a roadside ditch. At first, they couldn’t make out what it was. From a distance, it looked like a dark, sticky creature creeping toward them. Its body left thick black smears along the pavement, and the stench in the air was overpowering. At first, they were alarmed, unsure of what they were looking at. But as they stepped closer, the horrifying truth became clear — it was a dog.
The poor animal was completely covered in black tar — a thick, sticky substance normally used in construction or wood preservation. But on skin, especially that of a living being, tar is extremely harmful. It clings to fur, suffocates the skin, traps heat, and can be absorbed into the body, causing poisoning and long-term damage. The dog was struggling, weak, and clearly in pain.
The young men were shocked and heartbroken. But instead of walking away, they acted. They managed to find a police officer nearby, and together they arranged to bring the dog to Zoonosis Lanús, a local animal welfare group. The team gave the dog a name — Petróleo, Spanish for “petroleum,” in honor of the ordeal he had survived. Even though they were physically and emotionally drained, the volunteers kept going, making sure Petróleo felt safe, comforted, and loved. He had been through so much pain and fear, and now he was surrounded by people determined to help him heal.
At some point during the cleanup, Petróleo fell asleep in the tub. He was exhausted — not just from the rescue effort, but likely from the days of suffering he had endured before being found. He rested peacefully as the final bits of tar were washed away. But even with the tar removed, the danger wasn’t over. The toxic substance could have easily entered his bloodstream and caused serious health issues. The team monitored him closely, watching for signs of poisoning or infection. Thankfully, after a few difficult hours, Petróleo began to show signs of recovery. He lifted his head, his eyes brightened, and he eagerly ate the food offered to him.
Petróleo’s story is heartbreaking, but it’s also a powerful reminder of the kindness that still exists in the world. Those two young men could have ignored the strange, tar-covered creature in the ditch. But they didn’t. They saw a life in need and did something about it. And the volunteers at Zoonosis Lanús didn’t hesitate for a second. They stepped in, rolled up their sleeves, and saved a life — all out of love and compassion for an animal who couldn’t help himself.
Petróleo’s journey is far from over. While his body is healing, he still needs a permanent home — a place where he can feel safe, loved, and cared for every day. He deserves a fresh start and a second chance at life.
