While hiking through the rolling foothills of Idaho’s Owyhee Mountains on a quiet day, two hikers spotted something strange on the trail ahead. A large plastic tote sat oddly out of place among the natural surroundings. Curious and concerned, the pair cautiously approached it. As they neared the container, they were shocked to discover something heartbreaking—seven thin, trembling puppies huddled together inside, abandoned and alone in the middle of the wilderness.
The sight was devastating. These puppies, barely old enough to be away from their mother, had clearly been left with no food, water, or shelter. Their ribs were visible, their fur matted, and their eyes full of confusion and fear. The hikers, who had set out expecting a peaceful walk through nature, instead found themselves in the middle of an urgent animal rescue situation. They couldn’t just leave the puppies there. Knowing they had to do something, they gently lifted the bin and began the long journey back down the trail, determined to get the pups to safety.
Melissa Blackmer, director of Lake Lowell Animal Rescue, later shared the story with The Dodo. “\[They] were horrified to find them left out there,” she said, recalling how the hikers acted quickly to try and save the dogs. Once out of the forest, the hikers began contacting animal shelters and rescue organizations for help. But what they discovered was disheartening: nearly every shelter in the area was completely full. The region had been facing a growing crisis with overcrowded shelters, and the odds didn’t look promising for these puppies.
Thankfully, someone finally reached out to Lake Lowell Animal Rescue, even though they, too, were already operating beyond their capacity. Still, Melissa and her team knew they couldn’t turn the puppies away. It wasn’t an easy decision, but their commitment to protecting vulnerable animals meant they were willing to stretch their resources a little further for these innocent lives.
Once in the care of the rescue, the puppies were immediately examined by a veterinarian. Despite being malnourished and dehydrated, they showed signs of resilience. They were treated for parasites, given nutritious food, and placed in a safe, warm environment. Slowly but surely, they started to regain their strength. With proper care, their energy returned, and the staff began to see glimpses of their playful and affectionate personalities.
Although the puppies were initially shy, it quickly became clear that they had once lived around people. “While a little nervous, it was apparent they had been around people often before being abandoned in the mountains and were playful quite quickly with us,” Blackmer explained. Their wagging tails and eager eyes soon replaced the fear they had when they first arrived.
Due to space constraints at the rescue center, Melissa and her team reached out to their network of foster families. Without hesitation, several fosters opened their doors and hearts to the puppies. They were divided into small groups and sent to loving temporary homes where they could continue to heal and grow. These foster families provided not just food and shelter, but also the emotional support the puppies needed to feel safe again.
In their new environments, the puppies began to thrive. Every day, they gained weight, grew more confident, and enjoyed the love and care they had been missing. With each passing week, their transformation became more visible. Their eyes sparkled with curiosity, their fur began to shine, and their puppy antics brought joy to their foster homes. The puppies, once fragile and frightened, were now bouncing around with tails wagging and hearts full of hope.
Melissa Blackmer expressed deep gratitude to the fosters who had stepped up to help. “We can’t state enough how important foster homes are to animal rescues,” she said. “We depend on foster homes just as much as we do their forever homes.” She emphasized how these temporary families play a crucial role in the recovery and rehoming process. Without fosters, many rescues simply wouldn’t have the capacity to save as many lives.
As the puppies continue to grow stronger, they’re also growing closer to their next big chapter—adoption into permanent, loving homes. Lake Lowell Animal Rescue is already working on finding the right match for each one, ensuring they go to families who understand their past and are ready to give them the future they deserve. Soon, these seven brave little dogs will be off to begin their new lives, far from the trauma of the mountains and the plastic tote they were once left in.
